Rails by the River 2023 PCR Convention is pleased to announce that we have arranged several exceptional tours for this convention. Transportation will be provided for most tours.

 

You MUST be registered for the in-person Convention (attending the virtual convention does not qualify) to go on any of the tours. If not already registered, please go to the Registration page to register for the Convention. You may add available tours when you register.

We are offering three tours (descriptions below). All three are now available for purchase. Seats are limited to 14 for each event. They can be purchased now at the RBR 2023 Convention Store

California State Museum Collection

Description: California State Parks is the steward of historical collections that have been developed over the past 130 years. The State Museum Collections Center (SMCC) serves as the repository for over 1 million historic objects and artifacts from parks throughout the state. At SMCC, State Park Curators, Archivists, and Collections Managers care for and manage California’s largest collection of artifacts, archival documents, and photographs. The recently renovated building provides 160,000 square feet of space dedicated to museum collections care.
Location: Southwest side of McClellan at 4940 Lang Ave, McClellan, CA 95652.
Tour Time: 1:30pm to 3:00pm
Cost: $20.00

Bus schedule Leaves hotel at 1:05pm and returns at 3:30pm

Siemens Light Rail Car Factory in Sacramento

Description: Automation and mobility in light rail for USA. Cars are constructed here for delivery across the states. Tour Time: 9:00am to 11:00am

Bus schedule Leaves hotel at 8:15am and returns at 11:40am
NOTE: Tour on shop floor, so toe protection is required. It can be steel-toed shoes or steel cover clip-on over your shoe (no sandals). Search "safety toe covers" or "Metal Foot Guards, Steel Toe Clip". It is 2 miles (3 km) of walking. Siemens will provide eye protection and hearing protection. Names of all people on tour will be sent to Siemens Mobility 24 before tour begins.

California State Railroad Museum

Description: The California State Railroad Museum, located in Old Town Sacramento is one of the premiere railroad museums in the world. Visitors can step back in time to the late 1860s when the Transcontinental Railroad was being built between Sacramento and Omaha Nebraska. Museum displays show historic documents and artifacts from this construction project, including one of the “Golden Spikes” used at Promontory Summit, Utah during the May 10th, 1869 ceremony celebrating the rail line’s completion.
Several locomotives formally utilized to traverse the coast, valleys, hills and mountains hauling freight and passengers are on display throughout the museum. Museum guests can stroll through heavyweight and streamlined passenger cars as well as a railroad post office car.
The NMRA’s “Magic of Scale Model Railroading” exhibit on the 3rd floor of the museum tells the story of the hobby dating from the 1930s to the present. Items in the exhibit from the NMRA’s Howell Day Collection include dioramas culled from private layouts as well as John Allen’s “Timesaver”.
