We have two new very special industrial tours available. How special you ask? So special that only a limited number of attendees can be accommodated on each tour. Due to the limited
availability of these tours, drawings will be held to determine who goes on the tours.
See details below for how to enter the lottery for each tour. Maybe you'll get lucky and win both tours!
Industrial Tours
The following applies to both industrial tours:
- Carpooling is a must since parking is limited. Both plants are located in White City, about 8 miles from Medford. Maps and driving instructions will be provided to the drivers.
- Mandatory Dress Code strictly enforced! These are industry-wide requirements and must be followed:
- Full-length trousers for all – no shorts permitted.
- Footwear must cover entire foot and have low, flat heels and soles – no high heels, sandals, flip-flops, etc.
- Wood products manufacturing plants are not ADA compliant and have many hazards to those with mobility issues. Narrow stairs, catwalks, and debris in walkways are often encountered.
- Persons requiring walking aids or having mobility issues are asked to not take either of these tours.
- Both tours are FREE!
Western Veneer and Slicing
Wednesday, May 2, 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM (End time estimated) – The tour of this company, a sister operation of Medford Moulding, provides a unique opportunity to see the manufacture of architectural grade products that result when modern engineered wood technology and computer-age machinery are married to the centuries-old process of fastening thin samples of desirable wood to less desirable ones. The tour will include slicing the veneer, preparation of core stock and veneer, lamination and finishing.
Since this plant will be running, ear plugs are required and will be provided.
This tour is limited to 15 persons. We will be holding a drawing to pick the people for this special tour. Click here to enter the drawing for the Western Veneer and Slicing tour. The winners of this lottery will be announced prior to departure in the lobby.
Cascade Wood Products
Friday, May 4, 12:00 to 4:00 PM (End time estimated) – This company manufactures component parts for doors, windows and complementary moldings and forwards them to an assembly plant in Tennessee. Their product line includes both solid and finger joint (paint grade) parts. The Company is renowned internationally for its line of architectural columns. The plant is capable of manufacturing many styles (classic Greek to modern) in sizes ranging from railing balustrades to those measuring three feet in diameter and twenty feet tall. The plant makes use of digital imaging and computer driven cutting machinery to optimize raw materials use and product quality. Ninety percent of the lumber comes from Oregon sources.
UPDATE! - Tour cut back to 5 people!
Due to the improved economy, Cascade's plant will be operating Friday, reducing the number of people they can handle on the tour from 15 to just 5. We're trying to get more, but have not heard back yet.
This tour is limited to 5 persons. We will be holding a lottery to pick the people for this special tour. Click here to enter the lottery for the Cascade Wood Products tour. Winning registration numbers will be posted on the Information Kiosk in the evening before the tour.
Train Mountain Railroad Museum
Thursday, May 3, All Day – We’ll be bused over to Train Mountain Museum, located in Southern Oregon in Klamath County. Train Mountain is the world’s largest hobby railroad and is so listed in the Guinness World Records™ book with over 30 miles of 7.5" gauge track, hundreds of structures, and 2,400 acres of beautiful forest land.
Train Mountain Map (3.0 Mb)
We'll be served a nice hot lunch by Train Mountain volunteers. We’ll be treated to a guided tour of their shops and main yard area, as well as a train ride around the property. While we’re in the area, we'll also visit the Collier Logging Museum, a great outdoor museum of Western logging history and technologies.
This promises to be a great day and a chance to visit Train Mountain, which is not normally open to the public. This will be an all-day tour, leaving in the morning and returning to the hotel in time for dinner and other evening activities.
NOTES & ADVISORIES:
- Attendees will be required to sign a Train Mountain liability release form in order to participate in this tour.
- In the unlikely event of a breakdown on the line, a situation might arise where passengers would have to walk several hundred feet to the nearest roadway from the railroad. Attendees should be able to make such a walk with assistance.
- Train Mountain is located at 4500 feet and May 3rd is early in the season. Attendees are advised to prepare to dress in layers in case it turns cold. Weather reports at the time of the event should give us a better idea of exactly what to expect.
Price: $40.00 (limit 159 seats) First come, first served!
