Why "Sidetracks" instead of "Non-Rail"?

For many years a number of names have been used to denote the group of non-railroad oriented companions of the model railroaders and their activities at the conventions. Names have included “railettes”, “general”, “family”, and most recently “non-rail”. The NMRA 2012 National Convention in Grand Rapids has adopted the name “Sidetracks” for this very important group of people, in the hope that it will encourage more participation by more family members. For this joint PNR/PCR convention we will be using "Sidetracks".

This year's PNR-PCR Joint Convention will feature a program for the Sidetracks attendees. All Sidetracks convention participants are cordially invited to enjoy the fun, fellowship, and activities.
