Amtrak South & Back Tour

Thursday, May 1, 6:55 AM to 3:22 PM

"The Coast Line: San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara" brochure, describes points of interest along the way. Be sure to download it and take it with you to heighten your experience of the trip south and back. (Courtesy of Central Coast Railroad Festival.)

Enjoy unique views of the Pacific Ocean as you glide south from San Luis Obispo on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner to Santa Barbara. You will see some of the highest quality coastal habitat, with chaparral, coastal sage scrub and oak woodland, only visible from the railroad on the sprawling Vandenberg Air Force Base, a military installation in a national park setting.

After arriving in the resort town of Santa Barbara, you can walk along the sandy beach or stroll out over the Pacific Ocean on Stearns Wharf, California's oldest working wharf. Taste wines and eat lunch at a variety of restaurants, all while enjoying the fresh ocean breeze and watching fishermen unload their catch . Also nearby is the Reagan Ranch Center (free admission, opens at 11:00 AM), located in downtown Santa Barbara.

For the return trip to San Luis Obispo, you'll climb on board the Amtrak Coast Starlight for a repeat performance of the morning's trip. What could be better? Two different trains in one day! A truly unique experience.

Depart SLO Amtrak station at 6:55 AM, arrive in Santa Barbara 9:24 AM. Depart Santa Barbara Amtrak Station at 12:40 PM, return to SLO Amtrak Station at 3:22 PM.

The Cuesta is the most difficult climb on the entire Coast Line from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The steepest portion of the grade is about 2.2%. There are also places on the Cuesta where the train makes turns back on itself in such a manner so that both ends of the train can easily be seen from the middle. (Thanks to Bruce Morden for this information.)

Be sure to attend Bruce Morden's clinic, "Going North Over Cuesta", so you know what to watch for on the trip. Here's Bruce's turn-by-turn narrative of the trip suitable for printing to take along with you. NOTE: We may have a revision closer to the convention start date.
