Convention Car
The Sierra
Memories 2008 Convention car is a model of reefer #1002
operated by the Southern California Edison Company on the
San Joaquin and Eastern Railroad. The reefer was used to bring
perishable foods to the workers during the construction of
Big Creek Dam, the world's
largest hydroelectric project in 1912, in the mountains east of
Fresno.

Hank Johnston's book, "The Railroad That Lighted Southern California" documents the story of the San Joaquin and Eastern Railroad, one of the most fascinating and crookedest railroads ever built. A photograph of the prototype for the convention car appears on page 124 of the book. The model is a fully assembled 36' old time reefer (from Roundhouse molds) in a special Athearn Collectible box, with reefer yellow sides and boxcar red roof and ends, and lettered for the Southern California Edison Company. The lettering set was provided courtesy of Russ Clover of Clover House, especially for this project. The cost will be $25.00, with only 200 cars available, so be sure to order early. The convention cars arrived 1/23/08! The Irish Tracklayer is sponsoring this year's convention car. NEW! Click here to download a list of past PCR Convention cars. Send any updates to the webmaster.
