Layout Tours & Operating Sessions

Reno, Sparks, and Carson City are home to an impressive collection of quality model railroads of all sizes and scales, most within a short drive of the convention hotel.

We have lined up tours on several of the finest layouts in the area for your viewing enjoyment. Five of the layouts will also have operating sessions, as noted in the descriptions. Addresses, maps and directions to the layouts will be available at the Silver Rails 2010 Registration Desk.

There are no "on the way in" layout tours, but Leslie Ede's layout in Sparks is open Wednesday from Noon to 5:00 PM. There are several Sunday "on the way home" tours and operating sessions lined up, Jim Petro, John Currie, Charlie Lix, in the Reno/Sparks area, plus an operating session on Kent Williams' layout in Nevada City, California, just off I-80.

Operating Sessions

All registrants, layout tour hosts, ops session hosts and crews for the Silver Rails Convention are eligible to participate in these ops sessions, with the intention that many who normally do not participate in these structured operating events will take advantage of this open enrollment. No previous experience is necessary, just a desire to run a model railroad as if it were a real transportation system. This is not a special club or special interest group (SIG) event. It is open to all convention attendees and tour participants.

The operating sessions are being held at the same time as the layout tours, as indicated in the layout descriptions below. As of 4/16/10, only Jim Price's ops sessions on Friday and all the Sunday operating sessions have openings for operators. Please contact David Parks, bearwestern@comcast.net, to sign up for these openings.

This HO-scale basement railroad, the “Bash, Tweak & Pindingle”, represents a fictitious bridge route between the Western Pacific and the Southern Pacific in early 1950s Nevada. It leases engines from the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific to augment its own limited equipment. Les incorporates several modules from the Donner Pass Gandy Dancers into his 14' x 35' layout. Wednesday 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Operating Session

Dick has been working for 3½ years on his 14' x 23' HO-scale Arrow Creek and Western Railroad, a freelanced bridge line set in the Sierra foothills and serving the towns of Arrow Creek, La Mesa, Belden and Trestle Glen. It uses older SP and WP first generation diesels and a few steam locomotives. There is a 150' main line and several industrial areas to keep things interesting. A four-track east/west staging yard feeds the mainline and the three main towns and destinations. Signals have been installed. Rail Ops is used for switching and train schedules. Scenery is almost complete. DCC Digitrax.
